Religious institutions are charged with the responsibility to advocate for peace, unity, and forgiveness values in society. The Books used in worshiping provides the foundations and principles to follow in teaching the essential religious values in society. The Islamic religion, for instance, uses the instructions and laws that guide how the Muslims should behave and interact in the community, as the Bible is a worship instruction and guideline book for Christians.
Not all religious books advocate for peace, understanding, social relationships, and behavioral approach because some of them contain very disturbing portions of passages that conflict the morals of religious movements. Many Muslims have been known to use some verses from the Quran to commit crimes in the name of God. al-Tawbah and Anfal are among the Suras of the “holy scripture” of Islam. For instance, in Quran 8:12, God promises to “cast terror into the hearts of those who are bent on denying the truth; strike, then, their necks!” This list explores ten of the most disturbing Quran verses.
1 Fight Non-Muslims
Quran 9:29, “Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority, and they are in a state of subjection.” The verse orders the Muslims to fight non-Muslims because they do not believe in the same God as them. It is one of the many verses in the Quran that inspire Islamic terrorism and mass killings committed by Muslims in the name of their religion. The violence is against the values of religious entities, and it is controversial and disturbing especially in the modern world.
2 Turned Into Apes
Quran 2:65, “And you know well the story of those among you who broke Sabbath. We said to them: “Be apes—despised and hated by all. Thus, we made their end a warning to the people of their time and succeeding generation, and a warning for God-fearing people.” The verse states that those who violate the Sabbath were turned into apes. The verse implies that observing the Sabbath is mandatory and like a routine that every Muslim need to obey.
In the modern era, many nations have human rights and freedoms that guide the social endeavors of the public. For instance, the freedom of worship permits humans to elected whether to observe a Muslim or Christian Sabbath. Many people choose not to be associated with any religious entity and therefore violates the Sabbath, this means that the world will be full if apes, people turned into apes for breaking sabbath regulations.
3 A Man Can Marry a Girl Who Has Not Reached Puberty
The most significant controversy revolves around the Quran verses such as Quran 65:4 which encourages a man to marry a girl who has not yet reached puberty. The verse reads “Such of your women as have passed the age of monthly courses, for them the prescribed period, if ye have any doubts, is three months, and for those who have no courses (it is the same). For those who carry (life within their wombs), their period is until they deliver their burdens: and for those who fear Allah, He will make their path easy.” The disturbing and controversial verse violates the social values of any society and cultures in the modern world. It prescribes the waiting period of a female who has not reached puberty yet, hence allowing men to have sex with girls who have not attained puberty.
4 Cut Off Their Hands
Quran 5:38, “As for the thief, both male, and female, cut off their hands. It is the reward of their deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise.” The modern society demands justice for crimes committed such as stealing. The thieve is prosecuted and punished if found guilty. The verse above orders that are irreversible for the punishment for theft was cutting off their hand. Amputation denies the convicted thieves the chance for rehabilitation with the hope of ameliorating their behavior and becoming constructive and productive members of the society.
In Sura 5: 33, The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet. From opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter. The Quran verse points out that those who wage war or disobey Allah and his messenger are ordered to amputate both their hands and feet. No chance for correction. This is inhuman and religious injustice that is controversial to the cultures and norms of world societies.
5 A Man May Marry the Wife of His Adopted Son
One of the most disturbing and shocking events in the life of prophet Muhammed is his marriage to Zaynab Bint Jash, who was his adopted son’s divorced wife. The marriage is an embarrassment to the entire Muslim community because Zaynab was formerly married to Zayd, the freed slave of Muhammed’s first wife Khadijah, whom he had adopted as the son. The story referenced in the Quran states that Mohammed visited his adopted son and found his wife Zaynab unveiled and enamored by her beauty, he commented on her beauty in her hearing and when she told his husband, he decided to divorce her.
Then Allah or God commanded Muhammed to marry her. Quran 33:4, “Allah has not made for any man two hearts within him; nor has He made your wives whose backs you liken to the backs of your mothers as your mothers, nor has He made those whom you assert to be your sons your real sons. These are the words of your mouths, and Allah speaks the truth, and He guides to the way.” This verse suggests that the adopter can marry the wife of his adopted son’s wife or the adopted son may marry the wife of his adopting father.
6 Beat Them or Separate From Them
The vice such as Domestic violence is a societal menace in many nations; however, the Muslim culture divinely ordained and the Quran justifies domestic violence. Quran 4:34, “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded. and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”
The Quran does not only allow but also commands husbands to beat their wives for persistent misconduct, or the little fear by the husband for such misconduct. The men have authority over women, and the women are subjects that must obey and be obedient, therefore, illuminating an authoritarian family structure with the husband as the head of the wife. The Quran instructs men to separate from disobedient wives. Thus, the Islamic scriptures cite that Allah created men to be superior to women because the men are the maintainers of women in society.
7 A Man May Marry Four Wives
The Muslim religion allows men to marry as many as four wives at any time and have sexual relationships with an unlimited number of slaves as well. The concept of polygamy is based on the idea that the prophet Mohammed had as many as nine wives and still had sex with his female slaves. For instance, a specific verse from the Quran 4:3, “If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four. But if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.”
The Muslim nations are advocating for equality is contradicted with the concept of polygamy which is a mathematical contradiction. The same Islamic laws do not allow Muslim women to have more than one husband while openly allows men to have more than one sexual partner. This is gender discrimination as the Quran allows gender inequality in society. Religion should preach gender equality, but the Quran allows Polygamy which is highly controversial and not socially accepted in most parts of the modern world.
8 A Man Can Have Sex With Prisoners of War
The Quran allows Muslim men to have sex with captured female infidels or spoils of war. This contradicts the moral values of religious entities that rebuke sexual activities outside marriage. Further disturbing verses in the Quran regarding sexual encounters including the verse permitting men to have sex with their wives and the slaves. The laws allowing the Muslim to have sex with captured non-Muslim prisoners of war as a way to humiliate them; this enables the infidels to become the property of the Muslim commander. The commander can have sex with them just like with is wives without violating any laws.
The exact wording of the verse in Quran 33:50, “O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee. And daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her; – this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large). We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess; – so that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
9 A Woman’s Witness Testimony Is Half of That of a Man’s
The testimony of a woman is considered half that of a man in the Islamic legal systems. The verse compares the testimony of two women to that of one man in the verse of debt, in Quran 2:282. The ability of women to recall things is compromised based on the values incorporated in this verse. The jurists in the Islamic community apply the obligatory Quran verse when assessing the witnesses and testimonies concerning a case among Muslims. The verse states “and call upon two of your men to act as witnesses; and if two men are not available, then a man and two women from among such as are acceptable to you as witnesses…” – Quran 2:282.
It goes further to explain the reason the testimony of one man is worth two testimonies of two women, “…so that if one of them should make a mistake, the other could remind her.” This implies that the intelligence of women is lower to that of men. The ability of women to serve as testimony giver or witnesses in cases involving financial transaction is limited unless supported by the testimony of another woman. It is on outright discriminating against the female gender because they are represented as being unable to comprehend facts which are controversial and disturbing in the society where equality is embraced.
10 A Woman Inherits Half of What a Man Inherits
The Islamic religion provides equal rights between men and women encompassing but not limited to working, the concept of inheritance, possession of the property, and wealth acquisition. According to Islamic laws, both men and women have a share, definite share from the legacy left behind by the parents and close relative. The verses regarding inheritance revealed to the prophets at the period when women were not allowed to inherit any legacy and resources left by the deceased parents unless the will says so or at the pity of the eldest son of the family to share the inheritance with her. The verses concerning sharing the legacy among women and men members of the family astonished many people.
However, the inheritance regulations incorporated in Quran discriminates the proportion of heritage that is allotted to the female, for instance, the female child inherits half of what the male child inherits from the wealth of the family left by the deceased parents or close relatives. Quran 4:11, “Allah charges you in regard with your children: a son’s share is equal to the share of two daughters; if the [children] are [only] daughters and two or more, their share is two thirds of the legacy, and if there is only one daughter, her share is half [of the legacy]. And each of the parents inherit one-sixth of the legacy of the deceased had children, and if the deceased had no children and the parents are the only heirs, the mother inherits one-third; if the deceased had brothers, the mother inherits one-sixth; [all this is] after executing the will and settling the debts of the deceased. You do not know which of your parents and children benefit you the most. This is Allah’s injunction; surely Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.”
